ALS, 1804 June 3 : Washington, to Henry Dearborn.

Written to his Secretary of War, Jefferson acknowledges receipt of a letter from Dearborn in which he had told of slanders about him (Dearborn) being spread by Seth Hunt who was seeking a government position. Jefferson had been told about the slanders by his Postmaster General Gideon Granger. The President writes: "I assure you on my sacred honour that I never heard one word uttered but from Mr. Granger ... and the sole object of his communicating with me was to engage me to endeavor to prevent the matter being carried into public papers.
